[Matroska-users] Problems with Haali Media Splitter

Bummer.
I tried opening one of the "bad" files in VLC, and I kept getting the "I don't understand the format" errors. However, the files opened up fine in both Media Player Classic and Windows Media Player 11.
Is there a different way for me to find the actual format without using VLC?

VLC player -> Tools -> Media Information/Codec Information.

Ivan - I'm sorry ... The "H.264" is a mistake on my part (I'm a bit new to this). I knew the files were high def material, and I mistakenly used the "H.264" label on them.
Is there an easy way that I can find out what specific format the bad files are (maybe with GraphEdit or some log file)? It could help iron out what the real problem is.
Thanks ...

Ivan - I have only seen the crash occur with H.264 *.mpg files,
Well there's your problem! Last I checked, H.264 doesn't go into MPG files. You'll typically find it in MP4, M4V or (extremely rarely) TS files.
but not on *.mkv files yet. It may occur on .mkv files too, but I haven't seen it. However, if HMS is not installed and I try to play any HD .mpg file in Window Media Player or VLC, I get an error that the player "doesn't understand the format". Installing HMS fixes this problem, but then I get the win32 exceptions.
Sounds like someone just screwed up the file extension. I'm pretty sure that's supposed to be an MKV file.
Loic - I tried installing HMS without the shell extensions, but that didn't seem to make a difference.

I have a problem when I have Haali Media Splitter installed.
Although the Media Splitter itself seems to be working OK, if I
have HMS installed, I see the following error whenever I select a high-definition .mpg file:
An actual MPG or an MKV?
An unhandled win32 exception occurred in explorer.exe [nnnn]
If I uninstall Haali Media Splitter, the win32 exception disappears, but then I can't play any high definition content in any of my media players. Also, if I try running graphedit
while HMS is not installed, it says that the file can't be played.
What kind of content can't you play, and how so do you mean "can't play any high definition content"? Do you mean MKVs, or will HD MOV files from Apple's trailer site not work, or any of Microsoft's HD WMV samples not work wither? Also, there are some other HD samples out there that ought to work without Matroska, such as "Elephant's Dream" (which is an "open source" movie and is legal to distribute over the Internet)
The reason I ask is because Haali's Media Spliiter oughtn't interfere with the rest of the computer's playback of meda. Depending on your definition of "can't play" that might just mean you don't have enough processing power to play back high definition video.
Does anybody know what is going on?
Sounds like a problem with Halli's Media Splitter. I'd contact the developers, but it could just as easily be a problem with something else in Windows causing a problem.
Thanks ...
