Speaking as a Mac user, you don't need to (nor does it benefit you to) convert an MKV to an AVI. In some cases, it's not possible to make the conversion, and in a decent number of cases, you lose part of the video (additional audio tracks, subtitles, chapter points, metadata, attached files, etc). Just install VLC and you'll be set with everything you'll need for a good long time. If you have your heart set on using QuickTime, install Perian, but I still recommend you use VLC (speaking from extensive experience) because it supports a number of features that QuickTime doesn't support, even with Perian.
