It's probably the H264 codec that is too heavy for your computer. If 
you're on windows, try the latest FFDShow or CCCP pack. If it's still 
doesn't work you can purchase CoreAVC that is much more friendly with 
slow/old machines.

On other OS make sure you have the latest version of VLC or MPlayer.
