The matroska site is not very clear about whitch License applies to mastroska libs or pack.. Are the Mastroska libs under GPL/QPL or LGPL? Is the directshow Haali Media Splitter under the same license? We could not find any explicit answer when installing the Light and Full pack (both of them don't ask you for any license agreement, may be someone forgot to put one), and the French and English site don't say the same thing. The French site args that it's under GPL/QPL and the English one say that it's LGPL. We would like to know whitch one we have to put when distributing Haali Media Splitter and Matroska Libraries. hope you could give us an answer, and sorry for my poor english. Haali's Media Splitter is not open source, but the Matroska parser is available in source format. But I don't know the exact license, I think it's BSD or MIT. Bon amusement. Although it might not work in Windows 95/98/SE. You can either use VLC (Videolan) or MPC (Media Player Classic). The main reason is that GPL v3 says that the covered code can't be used in anything that includes Digital Rights Management. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/01/26/linux_torvalds_gpl/ Of course, this is not really an issue, because it's almost (I still have to find a solution) to do DRM with Open Source. And actually the DRM, to work, needs the help of the OS to ensure "privacy" at all levels. So any GPL code (that has to be public, even v2) can hardly protect the content from the user, since you can always add a backdoor at any level... So in short, the DRM statement in the GPLv3 is ridiculous because GPL will never used for (actual) DRM programs. It's just politics. -- robUx4 on blog From thetrueavatar at gmail.com Sat Jan 28 20:43:40 2006 From: thetrueavatar at gmail.com (thetrueavatar thetrueavatar) Date: Sat, 28 Jan 2006 20:43:40 +0100 Subject: [Matroska-general] Is mkv ready for menu?
