Hi guys,

I'm rewriting a tool to extract 
tracks/chapters/attachments/cuesheets/tags...from mkv & mka files. Could 
you test this <http://kurtnoise.free.fr/Wizard.zip> please ? It's just a 
Wizard. No complicated to use it. There are only 3 steps. (Check out 
this post <http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=719672#post719672> to 
see some snapshoots.)

mka support is not finished yet. So, test it only with mkv files please. 
Suggestions are welcome of course...

ya.. by checking only the file extension instead of actually opening the
file and looking at the "magic" which is usually the first bytes of the
file (or having streaming formats that send a MIME type), MSFT has again
caused some grief. *sigh*

however, your solution seems reasonable-- mp4 is a generic "container"
format like ogg is according to this definition at wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mp4 and m4a is used as a file extension for
audio using the mp4 container format.

please make sure this is documented in the appropriate section of the
website (along with the rationale).

     I have a group of .mkv files that refuse to show video. Both Audio Tracks work but this is no help. I've tried running them in Real Media Player, Windows Media Player, and The Core Media Player and no video has yet to show up. I have all codecs that seemed necessary: Divx, mkv, avi, and various others. It may be that I don't have the XviD codec but thats due to the fact that I couldn't find one that you didn't need to have intricate knowledge of decoding to use. so if you think that not having the Xvid codec is the problem please direct me to an easy install version, if you think the files might be corrupted then let me try and send you a copy of one of them for your delibiration. Please help.

It does include what you need to decode XviD.

Hi everyone,
 I am hoping you can help me. I am not a computer newbie, but I am not the
expert most of you are! I downloaded a video Matroska file, and need to open
it. I downloaded the full pack from the Matroska website. I didn't do
anything else (I didn't know if I needed to). Now, when I try to open the
file in Windows Media Player, I get video but no sound. I tried VLC Media
Player, and the first time I got sound but no video, and now it won't open
at all. WinMPlayer and DivX player won't open the file at all.
 Please help :)

I hope you installed the pack, and not only downloaded it ;) ? If so, do 
it again and READ EVERYTHING THATS WRITTEN THERE and on 
http://packs.matroska.org ... i bet your MKV has Realvideo inside, so 
you need Realplayer or Real Alternative installed also.

As a computer expert, you should know that if you install something, it 
should behave the same way. So you probably did something else in the 
middle.
To know what audio codec is used, try to load your file in MatroskaDiag 
and check the report (you can send it here).

What exactly do you need? Sample/reference files including all or a
specific subset of Matroska features? I'm sure that we can help you out;

By chance I seem to have finally "solved" the annoying context menu lag 
on my TabletPC! :) How was it done? I just installed the "Matroska Pack 
Full v1.1.1" (which contains many common audio and video codecs) and 
enabled its context menu extension. The most obvious (but not 
necessarily true) explanation is that installing Matroska's context menu 
extension somehow fixed the context menu bug which was presumably 
introduced by upgrading my TabletPC to Windows XP SP2. Now I'm really 
happy that my productivity is not restrained by this bug anymore :)"

Now what is this Context Menu thing ? The equivalent of the right click 
(long click) ?

Hmm, there is no such document. We have specs about the file structure
and about how different content ( = differend audio / video / subtitle
codecs) are stored inside Matroska. Those are available at
http://www.matroska.org/technical/specs/index.html for the format
itself, and http://www.matroska.org/technical/specs/codecid/index.html
describes how the different codecs are handled.

There are at least two applications that can read various input formats
(like AVI, MP3, MP4, RealMedia etc) and produce Matroska files with
quite a lot of features: AVIMux GUI (please use Google, it's easy to
find) which is only available for Windows and my own MKVToolNix package
( http://www.bunkus.org/videotools/mkvtoolnix/ ) which is available for
both Windows, Linux and many other systems.

We just released a new pack that is quite similar to the previous one. 
The main difference is the use of the up to date Haali Splitter that can 
read more files and future files too.

There is also an updated version of ffdshow with better H264 playback 
among other things.
