[Matroska-general] dvd player

If i burn an mkv file onto a dvd disc, will it work in
my dvd player i.e will it keep the subtitles.

I have converted the mkv file to an mpeg file and
burnt it onto dvd it plays ok but does not retain the
subtitles 
how can i get the subtitles to come up
