please allow me to introduce myself, my name is Christian HJ Wiesner and

i am project administrator of an open standard / open source audio/video

container format called MATROSKA . Besides the Russian sounding name, 
almost all of the developers of this project come from Europe ( mainly 
France and Germany ) and were creating this new standard free of cost, 
in their free time.
 
We were informed that the Chinese Government is planning to develop a 
new standard for audio and video compression called 'AVS' , and we would

like to invite you to have a look at the specification of the matroska 
container to see if this could be an option for you.

Attachement Files ( cover pictures, lyrics, etc. )

Just to show the capabilities of this container, even if not being 
directly releated to your project, here is what our matroska tools do 
currently support :

RealVideo 9 video
AAC audio
AC3 audio
MP3 audio
Ogg Vorbis audio
DTS audio
SRT Text Subtitles ( UTF8 )
SSA/ASS Advanced Text Subtitles ( UTF8 )
etc.

We would be pleased if your developers could consider to use the 
matroska specs as a basis for your own container format, or if AVS would

use matroska as it is, of course without any payment as matroska belongs

in the public domaine ( no patents applied for, and its impossible to 
patent now as the specs are public already ).

Yes it does play the MP3 ones. But it failed for the one with MP3 and 
Vorbis, audio behind play very very fast (the whole movie in 5s) and 
then the video plays normally, silently...
Anyway it's already a good move for a beta thing.

VLC also has some problems with Matroska files on OSX. Not enough CPU ? 
But it plays too. All in sync, of course.

This file is "final"--QC'ed and well-tested in my side,

this is a great day for the complete project, we have basically 
everything working for the upcoming chip release, only some last 
recompiles against the very latest library.

1. libmatroska/libebml 0.5.0 : Available here :

to include Gabest's filters in this release, as our own 'official' 
filter gave problems with seeking in the file on some tester machines,

checking for Win9x/ME ( we cant install the unicode versions on them ), 
and will deliver this package tested via email to you until this afternoon.

4. mkvtoolnix/mkvmerge : Have to be compiled against the newest library 
and tested, but its working perfect with the very latest beta of the 
lib, and there were no big changes ; It has support for chapters

5. mmg : the Windows GUI for mkvmerge, its working very good including 
chapters, and the recompile of mkvmerge ( see above ) wont change 
anything in the CLI structure of the program. To be obtained here :

6. TCMP RC4 : The guys are still asleep, but i know its ready, the 
Pre-RC4 was tested heavily by several members already and found to be

7. matroska shell extension : Compiled against latest library also,

8. MPC : Gabest said he is already in contact with you, but he is too

MPC and the matroskasplitter/matroskamuxer filters ( they are GPL anyway

Hi guys,

as some of you may have noticed,  thanks to Konstantin 'Takuto' Troubin, 
who translated it.

However, for some weired reason the page will show correctly in Mozilla, 
Opera, etc, but not in IE :(

It seems to be a charecterset problem, Takuto's original translation 
page as HTML had

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=cp1251">

and it seems IE cant handle this at all, its showing some very strange 
characters instead of nice cyrillic. If anybody with some background in 
making Russian webpages can help us to set the correct tag, this was 
highly appreciated.

Ah, and, somebody has to steal the right flag from Doom9.org if he comes 
by ;) ....  Pamel has the most experience here i guess  :D ??

Hi there

i've installed the great pack of tools (0.5.0 i guess) and everything's
working all right. There is one thing that bothers me a it: the time after
I start a movie and before it really starts is way too long

He re are the details:

movie: 680 MB Xvid
audio: 1x6ch AC3
container: matroska of course
additional: 20 chapters and 1xsubtitles
time to load the movie from HD: 35sec
time to load the movie from CD: 1min35sec

I tried all asort of aplyers - tcmp, mpc and mplayer2

Gabest skipped over all clusters trying to find the chapters on
startup. That obviously results in high load times. Cyrius and I thought
it'd be better to have a short startup time sacrificing accuracy,
e.g. when the chapters are at the end of the file but there's not meta
seek entry for them present.

I don't know the outcome, however.

Well, there are different things. On the muxer part when a chapters are
added, they should be mentioned in the Meta Seek. And there really should
always be a meta seek (at least without the clusters).

Then on the playback there should be a simple option like "fast load" that
will only load the "meta" informations (cue, chapters, tags, etc) only if
they are before the first cluster... Maybe a secondary option (when fast
load is selected) would be "load more meta" which would load usefull "meta"
data (cue, chapters, tags, etc) when they are specified in a Meta Seek
entry.

When fast load is not enabled, it should work the way Gabest does it right
now. But IMO it shouldn't be the default (too basic) behaviour.

Here it is, the new mkvtoolnix version: 0.6.1. This is a pure bugfix
release that addresses a lot of issues that 0.6.0 unfortunately
contained. I would have been happier to have 0.6.0 as stable and bug
free as 0.6.1 is now, but some bugs I simply wouldn't have found without
your feedback, and for others there was simply not enough time.

Sorry, but this URL is completely wrong. Actually, i am quite pissed

for deletion on their server by me and another project administrator a 
couple of times already, but they simply write back bullshit like '... 
this project has generated usable code and this needs to be saved for

their page unusable, not even a bit close to the up-to-date status, in 
short simply crap. But still many stupid search engines return the

Try VLC then, http://videolan.org, its has pretty good matroska support 
already, based on libebml/libmatroska 0.5.0 meanwhile, and the VLC devs 
care about keeping up-to-date with the fast ongoing development also . 
It seems Xine wont get matroska support anytime soon, the main devs told 
me some time ago they have different priorities, and invited us to add 
matroska support to Xine ourselves.

There is an easy solutuon to that.
Simply create the matroska.sf.net web pages as a redirector to the 
correct page.
The search engines will soon stop going to sf.net and come directly to 
your page.

That was done long ago, and matroska.sf.net will forward to matroska.org 
already since that time, but http://sf.net/projects/matroska is still up 
and will show outdated info, until they finally agree to delete the 
project from their server, as per our request. And again, good search 
engines will give you the new pages already, only bad engines return the 
old project page still ....

Well, I've been somehow in matroska vacation since the CHIP release code 
has been done (2 weeks ?). But one more week is always good ;)

We should think about what comes next and how we can do it :)

        the actual dimensions are used for PixelWidth/PixelHeight, the
        dimensions stored in the RM container are used for the aspect
